Let's start off with something simple. Who are you?
Patricia Lynne but I go by Patty. A born and raised Michigander and transplant yooper (That means I was born in the lower peninsula of MI and moved to the upper peninsula.)
Could you tell us a little bit about your work in progress?
Which one? The story I'm working on getting published is called Being Human. It's about a boy, who is a vampire, and he's trying to figure out what it means being human even though he can't remember anything from his human life. (Please no mention of the SyFy show, I'm well aware of it and hoping I don't have to come up with a new title.)
What is the first story you remember writing? What was it about?
I was never much of a writer when I was younger, in fact in college, for my English class I got a D on a story I had to write for the class. Took a lot of work to get it up to a B. I don't remember what it was about either. I just remember being crushed at the first grade because in high school I had done pretty well on my papers then.
Are you more of a “plotter” or a “pantser”?
Panster. I never know the ending when I start. Sometimes I barely know the middle. I get the begging planted in my head and start typing until I finally stumble to the end.
All writers need encouragement. Who first encouraged you to write, and who is it that encourages you today?
My friend Erin. She encouraged me and offered to read Being Human and ended up helping me redraft it about four times. She even played grammar police for me. Today I have a few more writing friends from twitter cheering me on.
Which authors have had a significant influence on your writing?
Heather Brewer author of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. I love her stories, Twelfth Grade Kills had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and at one point I thought, I want to do that. I had been writing for fun for awhile and had been chugging away with Being Human and that story just felt like it was the one that begged to be told.
What music, if any, do you enjoy listening to while you write?
I don't really listen to music, sometimes I put on the TV for some noise but if I get in the writing groove I tend to become oblivious to the world around me.
What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a writer?
Erin told me my dialogue is very good so I guess that. Weakness: Grammar and punctuation are my bane.
What do you hope to achieve with your writing?
A story to touch others. Suck other people into my worlds to stand along side me.
What was once traditionally a print medium is now rapidly branching out into many digital formats. What do you think of this trend?
My boyfriend has a nook and a sony reader (and is thinking about getting a Kindle because he's a techie like that.) I haven't used either, but I had nothing against it. I think it's a great way to bring a ton of books along on a trip and I wonder what will happen to the book world next.
What was the last sentence that you had to re-read over and over again because of its awesomeness? What struck you about it?
Can't think of one. Guess I haven't found one yet.
What book(s) have you recently read that you would recommend to the readers of this blog?
Balad by Maggie Stiefvater. I devoured that book. The whole Vladimir Tod series and Beastly by Alex Flinn.
What advice do you have to other aspiring authors out there?
There's a lot of advice out there, a lot of conflicting advice. Just remember advice won't work for everyone but you'll never know unless you try. Keep trying too because you will find some advice that will work wonders for you.
An apocalypse destroys the entirety of human literature, apart from the work of three authors that you can magically save with your wizardry – what do you save from imminent destruction?
Rudyard Kipling's work because I have fond childhood memories of reading them.
John Douglas' books on serial killers to remind me of the dark side of humanity and how the good can always shine.
JK Rowling to keep me young in mind.
Our time is at an end. For our curious readers, how can we follow your progress?
