Think Before You Act

Random thought to everyone currently in the querying process: maybe your query letter isn't the best time to go off on an angry tirade about an author or a novel that you think sucks.

Here's one very practical reason not to do this (apart from the obvious fact that it makes you look like a hot-headed jackass) -- you may very well be fuming at an author that your dream agent represents. And if not that, possibly one of their friends or colleagues.

It's never too early to start exhibiting a little discretion.

As writers, we get roughly 250 words to make our first only impression. Make it count. Instead of spewing venom about the publishing industry, take that rage and focus it into making a damn fine query letter.
