Procrastination Nation

back in english 101, i had to write an argumentative essay on anything i'd enjoy arguing. i didn't take the class too seriously because practically none of the students could write and you were lucky if they could read.

so my argumentative was debating the importance of procrastination in the art world.

it was mostly a joke, but utilized physiological facts regarding the blood-brain barrier and how sudden amounts of stress can cause a greater influx of adrenalin and oxygen rushing to your brain, thus rendering you more creative. and one silly mathematic formula the scientific american had put together to express how it benefits anyone who is confident in what they do.

i completed the essay only after writing a poem about poop, and only thirty minutes before class. the opening paragraph stated this as well.

but i wrote all of that before i had ever been paid to do any form of art-- again it was a joke-- and i had no idea what it would be like. i remember writing that one of the biggest upsides to procrastination when working for a client is how often they will change their mind: one minute you're writing a regular cowboy screenplay, and the next minute you're on the phone with your producer being told your film needs to include gigantic robot-spiders and a will smith song.

well, i've been drawing these dragons way ahead of schedule and i'm started to really despise seeing emails from the client. don't get me wrong: i still love the guy, he has a great sense of humor and he's not in anyway overbearing. but if they change their mind on the colors of this god damn dragon one more time i swear i'm going to draw them a smiling bloody tampon and a middle finger.

i was given two weeks to complete ten drawings. fairly simple. but the first few days were spent trying to nail what they felt was exactly the dragon they wanted. the end of the week was spent deciding whether or not he'd be red, orange, blue, purple, or pink.

for a while it was between orange, purple, and pink. but they ultimately decided on pink. so he was this pink and yellow dragon and i had about a week left to finish the drawings.

but only after debating over which of the six versions of pink they'd like. they picked one, i colored the dragons, then they changed their mind to a slightly different pink. so i redid the dragons.

and then it was quiet for a while. i sent four more finalized illustrations before receiving this:

So you've missed pretty heated discussions today on White vs. Yellow belly.

Everything from color theory to racial slurs has been referenced by each side. :)

I think Traun and Zak are strongly in the White camp, I'm still Yellow... but only marginally.

They made some good points.... when you put it against a background color... the white belly really allows the spikes down the back to pop.

Do you still have a strong preference for Yellow?

i have a strong preference for getting this done on time.

so, now he is a pink and white dragon. i've got three days till the deadline and only two more drawings to do-- but if they keep changing their minds, i'll never make it on time. the way i had scheduled it, my work would've been done four days in advance. but with all their fickle minds, i've been set back and back and back.

to clarify (before the comments come in), while we were deciding color palettes, i sent six different versions of the pink and yellow dragon and six different versions of the pink and white dragon to the team. they picked one and let me at it. then changed their mind. they had all the choices right in front of them! so it's not like i sent them one drawing and they came back with, "somethings off about it, but i don't know what."-- it was much more of a, "actually, remember those choices you gave us? well, is it hard to redo those four with the second color palette? we talked and like the second palette more."

i wish i had procrastinated a little. just a little. i should've just sat here and waited for them to change their minds. i'd still be exactly where i am right now, just with half the work put into it.

meh, i'm just being whiny. but please understand my frustration.
