i'd always wondered why mother's day was in the middle of may and not just on our birthdays. i mean, i feel like i should be wishing my mom a great day and sending her thanks on the anniversary of the day i squeeze my seven pound self out of her body.
but maybe that's just weird.
it turns out mother's day was more or less started by anne marie jarvis in memory of her own mother's death back in 1907 and by 1914 it was respected as a national holiday. i am thoroughly jealous i was not alive during a time when there was not only room for more holidays but, apparently, no particular trouble in starting a new one.
in 1914, woodrow wilson sort of changed the meaning and dedicated the second sunday of may to "mothers whose sons died in war."
so maybe all the mother's day flowers were originally in reference to funerals and headstones?
on a related note, take a look at my concierge assignment list:
i wonder if people would grow more creative if they were able to see how exactly the same they are as everyone else.
anyway, one of my fellow concierge sent me a video that i thought i'd share. it's old, but brilliant nonetheless.
you've got a week. don't forget.
