i don't know many people who would ever say, "the glass is half full" and mean it as a positive statement if a bartender handed them a half empty beer.
that's a horrible phrase. it's horrible because it makes pessimists look more negative than they are. no one in their right mind would call a five dollar beer half full if it were. just as no one would call a free beer half empty if it were.
those of us who say, "the glass is half empty" are referring to a glass that was promised full.
anyway, i know the-glass-is-half-blank is not about to stop going said and that's not really the point.
what should be discontinued, however, is "every rose has its thorn."
i do despise that one.
with less colorful words, what's being said is, "everything good comes with something bad." and that's just a very shitty thing to go about telling people. in fact, if someone tried to console me with that sentence i think i might just punch them in the face for being insensitive.
i propose a new phrase: every cactus has its flower. all bad things come with some good (though sometimes it takes a while.)
the glass is half-empty, alright? but every cactus has its flower-- a partly empty glass will one day be filled. that's the nature of things. and it's a lot better than "every rose has its thorn," or, "the glass is half full but one day it'll be all the way empty."
on a tangent, this is cactus boy:
and i'm upset tim burton created edward scissorhands before cactus boy was ever able to debut as my lonely creation who just wants love but is unaccepted by society due to freakish body parts that might potentially hurt loved ones.
poor me. poor cactus boy.
one day he'll have a date. and on his date, i'm sure, he'll have a flower.
