if you've ever been curious to see 288,945 of the most popular websites and how they rank against each other... don't be. i mean, because now you can. there may have been a more eloquent way of wording that.
nmap.org has made this fancy little semi-psychedelic icon map that gives you a friendly visual idea of exactly what sites are exactly how popular. the larger, the more frequented.
[via metafilter, which oddly enough, is not on the map anywhere]
google is about where most of us should've expected. but i love how tiny bing is. the google icon probably takes craps bigger than the bing icon.
i recommend checking out the interactive map and zooming around because you'll find those tiny speckles along the edge of the chaos are icons as well. it's like one gigantic internety julia fractal! the map also has a search function so you can see how your favorite website ranks (assuming your favorite is not popular enough to already be visible.)
oh, and fair warning: a lot of them are porn, porn-related, or just disgusting-- xhamster has nothing to do with hamsters, which i did not previously know-- if you're in an office i recommend not googling icons you're unfamiliar with until you get home.
it's funny, yet unsurprising, that espn and youporn are about tied. i'm pretty sure i can name at least one friend who has both of those websites tabbed and open at the same time daily. sports n' porn. for some, it's like chicken n' waffles.
but i'm a little shocked livejournal managed to make the list at all-- and at a higher ranking than blogger while practically tying twitter. that's goofy.
supposedly these stats came from alexa-- which is rumored to be credible-- but i slightly doubt some of the information. you know, like the fact this info-map claims people actually visit aol.com. and more often than craigslist or imdb.
UPDATE: turns out the "LJ" icon which i believed to be livejournal is actually livejasmin. and it's porn.
