anyway, i had about five hot toddies saturday, set my alarm and slept early to prepare for sunday. travis and i were going to go on a photo-walk and i had gotten pleasant news from ashley, as well.
Steven, my dear! The flash mobs are again coming to SF! This Sunday we'll be geeking it out for MJ's birthday. Last time you said you wanted to take photos but you were working.. but since you've joined the unemployment club I thought you might be more available ;) Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you our super-secret-squirrel times/locations.i do love flash-mobs, and i figured it would be a good way to go on a relaxing photo-walk with travis and still consider sunday a "resting" day. i'm sort of a wimp when it comes to being sick. good thing i never get sick.
we met at union square and sort of waited. everyone look so tired and bored, and i couldn't wait to witness their change when the team of michael jacksons arrived for a bit of fancy dance.
but, for a while, it seemed like they weren't coming. we would see a girl walk by looking like she might be a michael jackson scouting the area and readying it for the flash-mob... but usually it was just a regular girl who had recently shopped at h&m.
and then a girl in red and black walked in carrying four red and black balloons. the mj's followed, set up a small amp and began.
at first the reactions were subtle-- people would turn and smile a confused smile, a few people would stop to take pictures, the usual. but as the dancing continued, song from song, more and more people stopped to watch and enjoy.
i saw an elderly security guard talk with a few of the mj's, pointing at his watch and wondered if he really wanted to be the guy to ask a team of dancing pop kings to leave the area. when i first moved to san francisco, i was kicked out of union square for dressing as a magician and doing magic tricks that never worked. the security guard who removes a magician from union square is nobody's hero. and one that kicks out fifteen michael jacksons would be even worse.
but he let the dance go on. good call, man. there were even children dressed as thriller jacksons. and i'm slightly curious where one goes to purchase a silver glove. is it homemade? or is there, like, a store. i suppose costume stores might have them, but i've never seen them.
i said a quick hello to ashley after her dance and we were on our way.
thank you, again, ashley. everyone ought to be more like you and tell me about secret flash-mobs, free entertainment, and things of the sort.
also, travis filmed the entire thing and will likely shoot a video onto youtube soon.
