Aspiring Author Interview with Summer Ross

Let's start off with something simple. Who are you?

My Name is Summer Ross as for who I am- well I am a lot of things-A mother, a friend, a student, a writer, a fairy- the list can go on and on :)

Could you tell us a little bit about your work in progress?

My work in progress- well I have many at the moment. I'm working on experiences from my past in nonfiction, I have many short stories in fantasy I am revising, and I'm writing a series of children poems involving fairies.

What is the first story you remember writing? What was it about?

My first story- I was in first or second grade- LOL honestly I only remember doing the cover of it in red and blue and that it was about a girl.

Are you more of a “plotter” or a “pantser”?

I'm a little of both, depends on if it is short story, poetry, or novel length. Also depends on my mood.

All writers need encouragement. Who first encouraged you to write, and who is it that encourages you today?

I have always been the one who encourages myself to write. My parents didn't really care what i did growing up- I was on my own a lot. Now My Manly man and my best friend encourage me a great deal.

Which authors have had a significant influence on your writing?

I read R.L. Stine when I was younger, that's how I got started on short stories. I don't remember who started me on poetry. I'm a fan of Kate Chopin in the short story department as well- she writes some of the greatest work I have ever read- "The story of an Hour"

What music, if any, do you enjoy listening to while you write?

I prefer quiet when I write, I don't listen to music for it.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a writer?

Strength: emotion  Weakness: Character development

What do you hope to achieve with your writing?

Honestly I want others to feel something when they read my work- anger, sadness, happiness, humor. It doesn't matter as long as its there for them to feel.

What was once traditionally a print medium is now rapidly branching out into many digital formats. What do you think of this trend?

I think its a turning point for authors- They will gain more control over what they are doing in the industry. It will be digital for a long time to come and we might as well find our way through it now- it will eventually be tough competition in new generations for traditional publishers.

What was the last sentence that you had to re-read over and over again because of its awesomeness? What struck you about it?

Honestly I haven't had this experience in a good long time. I read so much in college and I have next to no time to sit and ponder much of anything I'm reading.

What book(s) have you recently read that you would recommend to the readers of this blog?

Chaucers Canterbury Tales. Hes a master at short stories. And anything by Kim Harrison- her fantasy is at the top of my list- She writes a great series about a witch.

What advice do you have to other aspiring authors out there?

No matter what others say- ultimately it boils down to yourself and what you are capable of- every rule out there can be broken if you know how to break the writing rules and do it well, trust yourself.

An apocalypse destroys the entirety of human literature, apart from the work of three authors that you can magically save with your wizardry – what do you save from imminent destruction?

Everything by these three authors-Kate Chopin, Edgar Allen Poe, and Kim Harrison.

Our time is at an end. For our curious readers, how can we follow your progress?

I have a blog called "My Inner Fairy" I put my college ideas there, my writing, my journey as a mother, everything really. I love blogfests so i always have an updated blogfest tab. http://summersvoice.blogspot.com/
